Phnom Penh: In The Groove

Get ready for some serious bass-bin shaking in Phnom Penh this weekend as a host of heavy hip-hop and reggae artists prepare to rock the city...

Papa Dub will warm things up on Friday night with a low-key gig at Le Museum. The instrumental dub duo comprises of Sebastien 'bass-master' Adnot and percussionist KCM Nayabinghi. Papa Dub combine live instruments with sequenced tracks and video projections. Le Museum is a relatively new venue near the Phnom Penh riverside and with a suitably salubrious French-Cambodian ambience. Like Dub Addiction (with whom Sebastien also plays bass), Papa Dub have succeeded in creating fresh, original music within a certain genre and with an unmistakably Cambodian sound. Check out the show on Friday.

Dub Addiction will stage the big show of the weekend at FCC – The Mansion on Saturday night. The al fresco venue was packed from wall-to-wall at last month's Astronomy Class gig and something similar might be expected this weekend. The six regular members of Dub Addiction hail from a variety of countries, including Cambodia (Jimmy Kiss, Chhen Chantrea, Yang Pov), Germany (Professor Kinski) and France (Seb Adnot, Toma Willen). There will also be special guests appearing at the Mansion show, who will include American singer Lab Orer. Read the recent Leng Pleng Q&A to find out more about Dub Addiction and their fantastic new album, Khmer Dub Empire. Check out the band's latest music video below and click the link at the right-hand side of this page to download Khmer Dub Empire.

The reggae-dance vibe will continue later on Saturday at D-Club when Wat a Gwaan and Phnom Penh Underground DJs and MCs ramp up the energy levels and the beats-per-minute count with a hectic ragga, drum'n'bass and dubstep session.

Also on Saturday, Nova club will welcome international hip-hop artist Ashton 'The Kid Famous' Bishop to Phnom Penh. The Toronto-based writer and rapper describes himself as 'what would happen if you mixed Kanye West with Eminem, coordinated by Fabolous’ stylist...'. Check out a great track called 'Next Year' in the video below and find out more about The Kid Famous via his website.

Back to Baroque

Meta House continue their series of classical music concerts with a piano recital by Alberto Firrincieli this Sunday evening. The pianist is an expert in the Baroque period of music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. His performance at Meta House will feature works by composers Frescobaldi Scarlatti, Soler and Bach. The presentation of live music performances is just one of the great things that happen on a regular basis at Meta House. The German-Cambodian Cultural Center often stages three or more events every day - ranging from film screenings to art exhibitions to DJ club nights. Go to the Meta Housewebsite to find out what’s going on, and don't forget to get a full idea of what is happening in the Cambodian arts scene via our sister website, Kumnooh.

Best of France

Doors Phnom Penh will present two choice jazz gigs this week with the Sylvie Izzo Trio performing on Tuesday and Anne Evenou singing on Wednesday night. Kae 'Sylvie' Lhassan is a well-known and much-loved voice in Cambodia and Anne Evenou is a successful singer in China. Both performers are originally from France and both are absolutely superb jazz singers. Doors impresario Gabi Faja has called up the finest players in Phnom Penh for these concerts Sebastien Adnot (upright bass) and Gabi himself (piano) back Sylvie on Tuesday, while famous duo Ritchy Boisson (drums) and Phil Javelle (keys) are reunited on Wednesday. Have a listen to Anne Evenou in the video below.

Leng Pleng will leave you with a quick reminder about a singing workshop taking place at the Links music store over the next few days. U.S. star Everywhr will cover singing basics, song-writing, stage presence and studio singing. The workshop starts today (Thursday). Contact Links directly for more information: 093 80 13 80.
