Brass and balls: TMSF and BBTS – pic: Sharky Bar Facebook |
An
extraordinary evening of music is scheduled to take place at Sharky
Bar tonight (Thursday). TMSF
(Thomas Magical Sound of
Funk) is a French band
comprising of members of The
Submarine Brass Band. If
you saw those guys perform during their last visit to Cambodia in
2014, you will remember a stage packed full with weird and wonderful
brass instruments, and very
funky music delivered with
powerful positive
energy. The TMSF
brass band will be augmented by drums and guitar on the Sharky
Bar stage. As if that were not
enough to make a great night,
Sharky Bar have managed to catch the Bareback Titty Squad trio for a farewell set of pop-punk mash-ups - before they head back to Australia tomorrow. Rock on!

Cloud
is a new arts and music venue in Phnom Penh, tucked away on
Street No.9 – south
of Street 294 and west of Sothearos Boulevard. This 'Tonle
Bassac' area of town is
becoming increasingly populated with cool, boutique bars and
restaurants. Cloud is
one of a few of the
new venues actively promoting live music – catch the elegant Lisa
Concepcion performing a solo
acoustic session there this Friday night.
Clay George
arrived in Phnom Penh last
month with an acoustic guitar, a suitcase and an
inclination to explore the Cambodian music scene. Originally
from Vancouver Island, Canada, Clay found himself with a choice of
re-locating to California or
exploring South-East Asia. Fortunately for us, he made the right
choice! The former postal
worker has a deep, sonorous voice and
a silky- smooth guitar
picking style. He also has
three albums of great songs, authentically reminescent of the
Austin, Texas 'outlaw'
country singer-songwriters such as Steve Earle, Guy Clark and the
master Townes Van Zandt. What
becomes immediately
obvious, upon hearing the opening bars of one of Clay
George's tunes, is that this
guy is 'the real thing'.
While classic
'Americana' music is quite a common currency in the music bars of
South-East Asia, Clay is
an extremely refreshing
change from the usual succession of clapped-out wilburys hacking
their way through a Bob Dylan or Johnny Cash number. Check
out more tracks and videos via his website
and click the link below to
watch the music video for his song 'This Old Town', featured in
television series 'Justified'.
Clay will be
playing an acoustic set at Sharky
Bar
on Friday night, alongside Scott
Bywater and
Jeff Sleeman.
Lots of great DJ
parties will be taking place this weekend. Phnom Penh Underground
DJs Sequence
and Cambo Disco Club will
be returning to the rooftop of
Dusk Till Dawn
on Saturday night. The
seventh-floor open-air nightclub affords an excellent view of the
Phnom Penh skyline, allowing you to wonder at all those new buildings
that have sprang up since the last time you looked (while
dancing to house and drum'n'bass). Across the street, at
Pontoon Pulse,
The
Cuban Brothers
will be busting out some serious dance moves on
Friday night.
This UK-based performance troupe blend live music with comedy and
general mayhem. If you missed them the last time they blew through
Phnom Penh, check out the video below for a taste of 'Los Hermanos
Cubanos' – these guys really
know
how to put on a show!
Cambodia
DJ Academy are hosting
an event at Aeon Mall
this
Tuesday between 5pm and 8pm. The session, presented by DJ
Dylan,
DJ Bree
and Rakky DJ
will provide
a chance for newcomers to learn the art of spinning tunes.
Whatever you're up to over the next few days... stay safe out there
and... see you around the traps!
