The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 29th January 2015

Menh Sothyvann is better known in the music world as ‘Mr To’ - a surviving guitar hero of the ‘Golden Era’ of Cambodian rock’n’roll. He is a current member of the reformed Drakkar Band – who performed a number of memorable reunion shows in 2014. Phnom Penh gig-goers may remember the emotionally-charged and rocking performances at Sharky Bar and FCC – The Mansion. Mr To will be at Sharky Bar this Friday with his own backing band – reprising psychedelic sixties shreds and playing many of his own compositions. This should be a very cool gig. Check out the great video below, put together by Nichse7en, capturing Mr To in action at Sharky’s with Drakkar.

Dub Addiction return to Equinox this Saturday – the Phnom Penh venue where it all began for them back in 2011. Professor Kinski, Seb Adnot, Toma Willen, Chatria Chen, Jimmy Kiss, and Yang Pov continue to bring their unique brand of ragga-dub sounds to concert venues around the Kingdom of Wonder and beyond – with recent visits to Thailand and Réunion Island. Any Dub Addiction show is guaranteed to feature an irresistible barrage of heavy-duty grooves - layered with rocking guitar riffs, soaring Khmer vocals, funky keyboards, ragamuffin lyrics and the weird and wonderful sounds emanating from Professor Kinski’s onstage mixing board. This band must be experienced live.

Also in Phnom Penh on Saturday, Vibratone present a more laid-back, roots-reggae-style alternative with their show at Latin Quarter. The band, who play only their own original songs, have recently been busy recording their first album. Click the pic below to listen to a demo of the track ‘Phnom Penh Fire’ - recorded last year.

Papa Dub is a mixed-media musical project by Dub Addiction bassist Seb Adnot. Check out the video below to see a mash-up of awesome sounds produced by Papa Dub and moving images provided by Asia Motion (NB there are actually three different videos within this clip). See a live show by Papa Dub this Sunday afternoon at Le Pain de Jade in Kep.

Stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!

Krom Monster is an experimental musical fusion of traditional Khmer instruments with electronically-produced sounds. Sour Vanna on Gong Tum (an array of cymbals arranged in a circle), Chamroeun Phan on Tro Sao (a bowed, violin-like instrument) and Lun Panith on Ksae Diew (a plucked string attached to a half-shell) combine with avant-garde electronica music produced by David Gunn (on his laptop). The band, not to be confused with Phnom Penh based 'noir' group Krom, will be performing a brace of concerts at Meta House this week. Check out the Vimeo and Soundcloud links below. The highly atmospheric and captivating music of Krom Monster can be heard live at Meta this coming Friday and again on Wednesday.

Amanda Bloom is celebrating the completion of her second album, entitled Atlas - Journey of Hope, with a special show at FCC – The Mansion on Saturday night. Amanda is a completely original artist – combining virtuoso piano and vocal skills on her own classical-world-fusion compositions. She is joined at the concert by regular collaborators Tara Mar (cello), Michele Bowen (bassoon) and Malaysian drumming legend Lewis Pragasam (percussion). Amanda told Leng Pleng:

"I'm really excited to be playing with my trio again after a really hectic year. We've all been off doing various things... Michele had a baby, I went to Nashville and India... this is a really special gig for us to be back together again and doing what we love the most... playing for audiences."

As a bonus, Amanda has persuaded Conrad Keely (of U.S. band ...Trail of Dead) to give a rare solo piano set and superb newcomer Clayton England to perform some of his original compositions. This gig has all the makings of a great Phnom Penh night: a group of incredibly good musicians hailing from several different countries, playing new and inspired original music, in an evocative outdoor setting.

Julien Poulson of The Cambodian Space Project (CSP) has been busy in Kampot over the last few weeks, transforming an old building into the home of KAMA (Kampot Arts and Music Association). Never one to sit idle for more than thirty seconds at a time, Julien has also found time to form a new band, The Bokor Mountain Magic Band, before the return of CSP for their upcoming 5th Anniversary shows. In Julien's own words:

KAMA is a new initiative to nurture, mentor, promote and present contemporary artists and musicians in Cambodia and abroad. We're creating a great venue space and an annual program as well as fund raising via Indie Go Go to make all this happen... Out of KAMA, we also have a brand new act called The Bokor Mountain Magic Band... preparing to première in Phnom Penh on Saturday at the Latin Quarter.”

I will be spending most of my weekend crammed into a Cambodian public coach with The Jumping Jacks as we take a spin up to Siem Reap and Battambang, hitting Laundry Bar on Friday and Here Be Dragons on Saturday. Credit to Dragons for pushing the boundaries of the Battambang music scene and getting bands up there to play events (previous Dragons shows include gigs by Kampot Playboys and Cambodian Space Project). Cambodia's second city has a thriving arts scene but does not see anything like the level of tourist footfall required to support regular live music gigs. The Jacks will be joined at Dragons by Khmer songstress Miss Sarawan and Australian solo artist Tim Hall. Tim is perhaps Battambang's best kept secret – a seasoned performer and storyteller of a very high calibre. I hope to see the entire town turn up for the event on Saturday!

Back in Phnom Penh this weekend, a couple of interesting Sunday daytime gigs require a mention. From 9 until 11am, A group of Khmer musicians led by Min Bona will play traditional instruments at Wat Ounalom (on Sothearos Boulevard near the FCC). There will also be instruments on display until 5pm. From 1pm at the Cambodia-Korea Cooperation Center, a host of young Cambodian stars including Jimmy Kiss and Nikki Nikki will perform a fund-raising concert for Pour un Sourire d'Enfant (PSE) – a non-profit organisation that supports children in Cambodia.

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 15th January 2015

The Digs are a very talented group of professional musicians based in Toronto, Canada. They kick off a short tour of Cambodia this week with gigs in Phnom Penh at Samai Distillery on Thursday and Equinox on Friday. Band leader Chris Rompre told Leng Pleng:

This is the Canadian band that inspired me to start Durian [legendary Phnom Penh-based expat group] funk band a few years back. These guys are amazing and they’ll be joined many of the former members of Durian including Rhiannon Johnson and Euan Gray”
The Digs
Great news! Read more about this hard-working party band here in the Leng Pleng Q&A. The Digs will be taking their tight soul, funk and Motown sound down to Kep and Kampot next weekend.

Equinox will, this weekend, celebrate nine years as an essential part of the Phnom Penh music scene. The party starts with The Digs gig on Friday and continues with a Bacano show on Saturday and also... a free barbecue! Thanks to the hard work of general manager Anthony Mrugacz, Equinox does a lot more than just host music shows. Check out the venue website for details of Equinox live streaming, videos, radio station and recordings. Here's a word from the man himself:

I have heard time and time again from people, Equinox is the first place they had a drink when arriving in Cambodia and always the last place to have a drink before departing to Pochentong. Just a big thanks to everyone - customers, staff, musicians and artists. It has not always been easy, but it has always been worth it!” - Anthony Mrugacz

Lafidki is an avant-garde ambient electronic music artist, playing a short show at Meta House on Friday. The Berlin-based solo musician (with a Cambodian background) also integrates film into his experimental live sets. Lafidki, also known as Saphy Vong, last year released the EP Absynthax on Orange Milk Records. Check out his other-worldly sound via the Lafidki Bandcamp and Soundcloud pages - and read more about the artist via the Leng Pleng Q&A.

RJ Marshall
RJ Marshall contacted Leng Pleng to let us know about his new, alternative jam session taking place this Sunday afternoon at Showbox. Red Jack's Sunday Deep Down South completes the Phnom Penh Sunday open mic trifecta along with Sunday Sundowner Sessions at Alleycat and the Zargz open stage at Sharky Bar. It is therefore now possible to begin your jamming at 3pm on Sunday afternoon and continue unabated until midnight. I am not sure if my guitar fingers, vocal chords or liver will be able to handle such an epic cross-city session – but I am going to find out. RJ's Deep Down South session will be roots-music orientated and acoustic: “No vocal amplification. No loud drums. Cardboard box and all else fine. Extra love for homemade instruments.” - sounds interesting (and a fine opportunity for Television Ted and I to reform our harmonica-and-boxtop double act)!

Jimmy Kiss
Jimmy Kiss and Miss Sarawan round off the Leng Pleng gig week with a Wednesday night show at Doors Phnom Penh. These two rising stars both hark back to the 'Golden Era' days of Sinn Sisamouth and Ros Sereysothea, and both love singing the 1960's and 1970's Khmer rock'n'roll repertoire. Jimmy Kiss is also a talented songwriter and scored a big hit in Cambodia with his tune 'Baby I'm Sorry' – released last year on the first Songkites album. Learn more about Jimmy Kiss via his first full-length English-language interview piece, published right here in the pages of Leng Pleng. I also recommend checking out his Youtube channel for loads of great videos and songs, including this cheeky recent collaboration with Yang Pov, 'I Want To Know Your Name':

Whatever you're up to over the next few days, enjoy the music and... see you around the traps!
