The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 25th June 2015

Looking at the Leng Pleng Gig Guide this week, it would appear that the 26th June is a very popular night for great gigs in Phnom Penh (I thought that Fête de la Musique was last week??). Like a selfish kid at a party, this Friday night has grabbed all the sweeties and refuses to share them with the other nights even though it can't possibly eat them all. So we are faced with the choice of frantically running around several venues in one night, or otherwise missing out on some excellent shows. As always, Leng Pleng will point out some of the highlights. The choice is yours. Personally, I am far too lazy to buzz around Phnom Penh like a live music gadfly and prefer to take in one gig at a time. From the point of view of the performers, it is quite disconcerting to see a group of punters getting down to the music for one moment (or one drink), only to flit off to another venue a few songs later (often bopping and smiling as they head out the door... do they really love riding in tuk-tuks so much? Stay a while longer!).

Friday Madness

'Selfish Friday' has been kind enough to allow a few good gigs to take place on Saturday in Phnom Penh but there does not seem to be a whole lot going on during the rest of the week. Would it be too much to ask for venues to plan ahead and communicate more so as to avoid live gig log-jams like this? (Errr... yes, it would be too much to ask - this is Phnom Penh, where many gigs are organised just a few days in advance).

The Cambodian Spice Project: Live in Chili is the début release by resident Meta House band Electrick Universe. Tim King, James Speck and DJ Nicomatic have met up at the venue every month for the last two years to perform improvised, experimental sets of music. Electrick Universe combine live electric guitar and phrase synthesizer with recorded beats and sounds emanating from DJ turntables. The trio's eclectic grooves are extremely danceable in a fruity and funky way. The band also regularly invite other musicians to jam with them. This Friday's album release party will feature German saxophone player Moritz Holst and other special guests. The music captured on Live in Chili features recordings of previous Meta House sessions, mastered by Dub Addiction’s Professor Kinski. Electrick Universe have pledged to add an extra pinch of spice to the proceedings by giving away CD copies of the album to the first 26 guests at the party. We also heard a rumour that professional dancers have been hired to ramp up the energy levels of this performance even further!

Dub-a-licious

Video: 'Lab Orer' and Dub Addiction rock Sharky Bar in a roots-reggae style

Papa Dub are another great Phnom Penh band who combine live instruments and pre-recorded sounds to produce a rich fabric of funky goodness. Seb Adnot and KCM Nayabinghi are, as one would expect from two key members of Dub Addiction, hugely influenced by the hypnotic Jamaican sounds of dub reggae. Papa Dub will combine looped electronic grooves and video projection with live percussion and bass guitar at Sharky Bar on Friday. The venue has promised that the senses of sight, sound, and smell will be stimulated at the show. We are very curious to find out about the 'smell' aspect of that statement (?). One might also add 'getting your insides pleasingly rattled by humongous sub-bass frequencies' to the list of stimulations on offer – as Seb Adnot will reportedly be bringing along his own giant sub-woofers, especially for this gig! The Papa Dub show is further proof that Sharky Bar management are making good on their promise to diversify their music policy away from the familiar Westerner expat rock'n'roll bands. Check out their new weekly Showcase night on Wednesdays to hear some great local bands playing Cambodian-language music.

Check out the gig listings below for full information on all the great shows happening in Phnom Penh this Friday, including Kheltica performing with their new singer Andrea at the Alley Bar and the excellent Pavel 'zargz' Ramirez giving an intimate solo show at The Alley Cat Cafe.

Stuff not happening on Friday

Izabelle Gagnon – pic: Izabelle Gagnon Facebook

Izabelle Gagnon is a Canadian singer, dancer, choreographer, voice-over artist, DJ, MC, actress and model (busy girl!) based in Thailand. Following a successful stint in Phnom Penh last year, Izabelle is returning to Cambodia this week for a flying visit and a few selected singing appearances. She will team up with maestro Phil Javelle for a show at Le Museum on Saturday night. Expect a touch of glamour and sparkle from Izabelle as she performs a selection of pop and r'n'b tunes.

Moi Tiet! is the 'Scott Bywater Experience' – the fully-loaded, fully-rocking and fully-retooled band playing 100% Bywater originals. Scott had to split the group in 2013 when he departed for France, but this year found time to get the band back together for a limited run of Cambodian summer shows. Songs like 'The Long Division (I got the Beatles, she got the Stones)', 'Flying Into Pochentong', and 'The Love Bank' benefit hugely from the muscular instrumental backing of Andre Swart (bass), Chuck Villar (guitar), Jedil Robelo (drums) and Leonard Reyes (guitar). The prolific Scott Bywater (vocals, harmonica, guitar) also promises to perform a number of newly-minted songs alongside familiar classics. Grab a rare chance to see Moi Tiet! perform at Sharky Bar this Saturday.

As Leng Pleng readers may already know by now, Slur Bar has re-opened under new management. Full details of their live music schedule are yet to emerge, but Slur Bar have announced the return of their popular Monday night open mic session, from this coming Monday. The night will be hosted by ace blues guitarist Jeffro Sills.

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday 18th June 2015

Feast of Music

The musicians and venues of Cambodia will cook up an extra-large serving of delicious, life-affirming, live music goodness this weekend in celebration of Fête de la Musique or World Music Day. No fewer than sixteen live acts will grace a specially-constructed stage in Siem Reap between 2pm on Sunday and 2am on Monday morning! Meanwhile, in Phnom Penh, several venues are hosting a wide and varied selection of the city's best live music performers. Check out the packed Leng Pleng Weekly Gig Guide below and click on the event links for more information.

Leng Pleng has heard news of gigs being cancelled in Phnom Penh this Friday the 19th June – which is an official national day of mourning in respect of Senate President Chea Sim. Sangvar Day, who were set to play at Sharky Bar this Friday, will now perform at Oscar Bar on Street 104 tonight (Thursday). The hardcore rockers will be saying goodbye at end of the gig to bassist Mat before his return to France... and saying hello to new bassist Andry Rakotoniaina. Lead singer Robin Narciso also let us know that the band will be premièring a brand new original song at the Oscar gig.

Kampot Special
Anna Smyrk – pic: http://annasmyrkandtheappetites.com.au
We also expect many gigs will go ahead just as planned on the 19th of June – please check with venues to get accurate information. Anna Smyrk will be playing a special solo acoustic set at Madi's Bar in Kampot on Friday. The singer-songwriter, pianist and guitarist is currently taking a break from touring Australia 'in a second-hand Jim’s Cleaning trailer' with her band 'Anna Smyrk and The Appetites'. Check out some of her fantastically dark and atmospheric alt-folk tracks via the Anna Smyrk Youtube channel and Soundcloud page.

The Bokor Mountain Magic Band will be rocking KAMA's 'Sun Ra Space Bar' in Kampot on Saturday night. The band play a similar brand of female-fronted intergalactic Cambodian psych-rock to their sister group The Cambodian Space Project. The Bokor Mountain Magics have also recently added a red-hot keys player into the mix. Check out the really cool video below of the C.S.P. playing Pan Ron's 'Rom Rom Rom' as part of the 'Cosmic Cambodia' show at the Casula Powerhouse in Sydney, Australia.

Super Saturday in Phnom Penh

The 'exclusive and reclusive' Krom will be making a rare live appearance at Meta House in Phnom Penh on Saturday. The band have forged their own completely unique style of Cambodian crossover music - marrying two of the most beautiful soprano voices in the country (sisters Sophea and Sopheak Chamroeun) with spoken-word 'Asian Noir' poetry (by Australian singer/guitarist Chris Minko). The show on Saturday will provide a chance to hear songs from their forthcoming album 'Mekong Delta Blues' and will also mark the live début of new bassist and keyboardist James Mao Sokleap. Check out the video below to hear a new song from Krom called 'Cambodia'.

Odd Bar is a brand-new live music venue opening this week on Street 294 in Phnom Penh. Odd Bar is brought to you by Mel and Bona, the team behind the legendary Memphis Pub. The welcome arrival of Odd Bar on the the city music scene will be celebrated on Saturday night at a pre-World Music Day party. The line-up of performers has not been officially released to the public, but it is safe to assume that the extravaganza will involve some first-class blues rock from Bona's band together with a guest-list of specially-invited Phnom Penh musicians. Live music will continue at Odd Bar on Sunday night. Should be a great party!

Also in Phnom Penh on Saturday, Joe Wrigley & The Jumping Jacks will be crossing their fingers and toes for a rain-free gig at FCC – The Mansion. The rockabilly trio of reprobates will be joined by multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Phil Javelle in an early Fête de la Musique celebration with a 1950's rock'n'roll theme. One can never be quite sure which instrument Phil will pull out of the bag for his next solo - keyboard, saxophone, clarinet, melodica or... tin-whistle?

A Very Busy Day for Musicians

Phil Javelle is one of many great artists appearing at the 'Asean Beats' World Music Day mini-festival – taking place at Sofitel in Phnom Penh from 8am (!) on Sunday morning. Music-lovers willing and able to untangle themselves from their beds at this very unsociable hour will be rewarded with music from a great live jazz trio comprising of Lester Ang (keyboards), Lewis Pragasam (drums) and Phil himself. Later on in the day, more excellent live music will be provided at the Sofitel by Lindee La, Metta Legita, Lisa and Joshua Chiang.

Such is the quality and quantity of the events taking place in Phnom Penh this Sunday, it will be possible to start listening to bands over breakfast and continue with excellent live music at a different venue for brunch, lunch, afternoon tea (as they say in England), dinner and after-dinner drinks. Check out the Leng Pleng Weekly Gig Guide to find out more details about the great events taking place at Sofitel, K-West, Le Museum, Alley Cat Cafe, Links Music Store, LYLA Center, Cabaret and Meta House.

The timings of the Sunday shows are appropriately staggered to allow time between bands for you to finish your drink and hail a ride to your next destination. It's almost as if someone has planned it! Please don't drink and drive during Fête de la Musique – a tuk-tuk is much more fun and you can also contribute to the worldwide festival of music by performing songs along the way! Remember, 'Make Music Day' was first envisaged in Paris in 1982 as a free-entry music festival in which anyone is allowed to take part.

Whatever you're up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 11th June 2015

Leng Pleng is pleased to report that hardcore Phnom Penh-based rockers Sangvar Day have been back in the studio recording a full-length set of brand new material. Lead singer Robin Narcisco is full of praise for 60 Road Studios – a new recording complex and record label based in Siem Reap: '...the studio it's incredible; top-notch equipment and space. If you are thinking of recording, that's the place to go! ... recording wise, album is 90% there... It might take some time before tracks are ready, but you'll be among the first to have them' – cheers Robin, we are looking forward to hearing those songs! While waiting for the new Sangvar Day release to drop, check out the band's Soundcloud page to hear the EP they recorded last year in Phnom Penh

Alexandre Scarpati is the director of The Music and Art School of Siem Reap. In addition to being a professional musician playing trombone, bass and trumpet, Alexandre has a classical music licence and followed jazz courses at the Montpelier conservatory. The school was set up last year to provide high-quality music and arts education in Siem Reap and has 80 enrolled students (http://artschoolofsiemreap.com). Alexandre got in touch with Leng Pleng to let us know about a crowd-funding project he has set up to fund new equipment for the Music and Art School. Sounds like a very worthy cause to support! Find out more about the project at the www.ulule.com project website and and via the school's official website.

Steve Cannon is a very accomplished jazz trumpet player based in Thailand. Steve has forty years of experience in the music industry – working as a studio session musician and live concert player in Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon. Originally from Southern California, the expert soloist now plays regularly at the prestigious 'Living Room' jazz club in the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit Hotel in Bangkok. His performance repertoire ranges from 'straight ahead jazz to toe tapping Latin rhythms, and smooth sultry ballads' (http://www.stevecannon.net/blog). Steve Cannon will be performing a one-off concert at Doors Phnom Penh tonight (Thursday). He will be backed by a 'dream-team trio' of Phnom Penh-based jazz musicians comprising of Phil Javelle (piano), Seb Adnot (upright bass) and Ritchy Boisson (drums).

Jungle Rockers: Pervez, Sonny and Brent rocking Le Jardin

Euan Gray – pic: www.kenedgar.com
Euan Gray and Scott Bywater are two erudite Australian gentlemen and both hugely talented and experienced singer-songwriters. One can always rely on either of these guys to put on a great show. Someone at Farm to Table must have good taste, for they have invited Euan and Scott to kick off Acoustic Fridays a new regular live music slot taking place on a weekly basis. The al-fresco Phnom Penh venue was known as Le Jardin in a previous life. It has now been remodelled as an organic, eco-restaurant. Euan Gray will open proceedings this week with a solo set of 'relaxed and soulful' acoustic covers and originals, using his looper effects pedal to spice things up a little bit. Scott Bywater will be playing a set of original songs at Farm to Table on the 19th June.

Jeffro Sills is a blues guitar player from Chicago, now living in Phnom Penh. The experienced fret-master spent decades perfecting his craft in Chicago music clubs - where the hours are long, the standard is high and the audiences know the difference between hokum and hill country blues! Jeffro will, this weekend, be heading up a special blues band put together to pay tribute to the recently departed music legends B.B. King, Ben E. King and Percy Sledge – as well as the late Albert King. Phnom Penh musical heavyweights Lewis Pragasam (drums), 'Big' Chris Hilleary (bass), Jeff Sleeman (guitar), Ken White (harmonica) and 'Scoddy' Bywater (guitar, vocals) make up the sextet, with special guests to include Detroit's own 'Smokin' Kenny Smith. The band will perform, for one night only, at Sharky Bar this Friday. Let the good times roll!

This artwork is awesome! http://www.kinglychee.com
King Ly Chee are a hardcore punk band from Hong Kong. Having toured for the past fifteen years and recorded nine albums, the band are a major component of the Asian rock music scene. Their current Asian tour consists of ten gigs in nine different cities, across six different countries... in ten days! ...now that's hardcore! The Cambodian date of the King Ly Chee tour will take place at Showbox in Phnom Penh on Wednesday night. The show looks set to achieve ground-shuddering, legendary status with the announcement that renowned Cambodian head-bangers Sliten6ix will be re-forming to support King Ly Chee at this gig! We truly hope that the modestly-proportioned Showbox can contain such an epic pairing of hardcore heaviness. Should be a great night. Check out the excellent King Ly Chee website for songs, photos and lots more information about the band.

Cambodian raggamuffins Dub Addiction are on a two-month hiatus at the moment. Check out their very latest music video below, filmed last month at Links Music store in Phnom Penh.
