The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 30th July 2015

The Kings of Skank

Jahzad is a name associated with many good memories. Readers new to Leng Pleng may now be thinking something along the lines of 'what is a Jahzad?' Those who have been around Phnom Penh a little while longer will recall famously fantastic gigs at Latin Quarter, Equinox and the FCC. Why does 2013 feel like such a long time ago? Jahzad is one of those band names uttered fondly by expats during late-night drinking sessions: 'What ever happened to those great bands... Grass Snake Union, Mekong Pirates and... that really amazing Jazz-Ska fusion ensemble that we used to dance all night to...?' Well, for one night at least, Sebastien Adnot's 'dream team' of genre-busting ace musicians are back at Doors Phnom Penh. Euan Gray (sax), Alex Scarpati (trombone), Phil Javelle (sax), Jan 'Professor Kinski' Mueller (guitar) and Toma Willen (drums) will join Seb (upright bass) for a Friday night session. The band are directly inspired by the music of the Skatalites, which comprises of high-powered, jazz-inspired horn arrangements married to irresistible, high-tempo Jamaican rhythms. If this music doesn't move you...

Back to Mothership Earth

The Cambodian Space Project formed in Phnom Penh nearly six years ago and have been going from strength-to-globe-trotting-strength ever since. Their sister group, Bokor Mountain Magic Band (BMMB), perform a similar brand of psychedelic Cambodian space-rock. BMMB will be playing a special show at FCC – The Mansion in Phnom Penh this Friday night. The event will be filmed by a production team from Vice.comthis could be a great chance to have your funky moves captured for all the world to see! Leng Pleng has even heard a rumour that the FCC will be installing an awning to protect the band and audience from any potential rainstorms – a smart move for an outdoor music venue in Cambodia in the rainy season and an improvement on the previous strategy of 'let's hope it doesn't rain'. BMMB and CSP wing-commander Julien Poulson telegrammed this brief communiqué:

CSP in the UK -  pic: CSP Facebook
CSP tour in the UK has been absolutely brilliant. We've added a second guitarist, Jason Shaw, a Scot who has recently moved to Kampot. Also a horn section. All this ended up being recorded and broadcast live by BBC3 at WOMAD and sounded blimmin' marvellous. Other news is that CSP's newest album 'Electric Blue Boogaloo' is now available on CD and we'll have copies on sale in Cambodia from next week.”
Cheers, Julien. Bokor Mountain Magic Band will continue their rocking journey with a home-coming gig at KAMA in Kampot on Saturday night. Meanwhile, Miss Sarawan Band will be extending the Cambodian 'Golden Era' vibe at FCC – The Mansion. Ultra-cute twin sisters Lay Mealea and Lay Mealai will be performing on Saturday with a full band including guest tro (an instrument described as the 'Khmer violin') player Om Ton

Bat'Bangers Band will be rocking Sharky Bar on Saturday night. These four fresh-faced young guys from Battambang play modern, high-energy Khmer-language rock'n'roll with a great deal of exuberance. Bat'Bangers Band are relatively new to the Cambodian music scene but have already toured the length and breadth of The Kingdom.

Fare-thee-well, our Scoddy

Best Leng Pleng wishes and good luck to Scott Bywater as he prepares to leave Cambodia following a very productive few months of music-making. Knowing 'Scoddy', it will only be a matter of time before he swings by these traps again. Before he steps on to that big bus, however, there will be enough time to see him perform a farewell solo gig at Farm To Table on Friday evening, a mixed-media poetry show, The Stones Are Awake, at Meta House on Saturday and at the Sunday Sundowners open-mic session at Alley Cat Cafe. Attend all three gigs to win a signed book of poetry by Scott Bywater (unconfirmed).

Rockin' on in Kompong Som

Brooke Palmer is a talented singer-songwriter from the U.S.A. She gave up a 'cushy expat life' in Shanghai to hit the road, armed only with 'one big backpack and one ukulele'! ('Traveling Uke' YouTube channel). Like many other musicians travelling through Asia, Brooke soon discovered the irresistible charms of the Cambodian lifestyle and last year settled in Sihanoukville. Since then, she has been lighting up Kompong Som music spots with her beautiful and powerful voice and tiny instrument. Brooke Palmer told Leng Pleng how she keeps working even during the 'low season':
“I'm busy because I'm kind of the only regularly working musician around! I'm very versatile because I play a really wide variety of music and try to play 'to the people' and keep things accessible. The scene is very supportive and friendly. It seems like a lot more businesses are getting going with live music now because they want to get set up for high season. I like low season because there is not so much 'noise' - you get to know people and businesses better. There are still a lot of musicians around who want to jam and we've had a lot of very talented travellers come through... so there's still some variety.”

Brooke Palmer performs weekly at Utopia, Led Zephyr and Wish You Were Here in Sihanoukville. Keep up-to-date by checking the 'regular gigs' section of the Leng Pleng Gig Guide and follow Brooke's adventures via her Facebook page and YouTube channel. Check out the video above to hear an original Brooke Palmer song.

Whatever you're up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 23rd July 2015

Cambodia: Rockin' All Over The World

2015 might be remembered as the year that classic Cambodian rock'n'roll rose from being a cult curio to a global phenomenon. The second annual Cambodian Music Festival will take place this weekend at Pearson Park Amphitheatre, California, U.S.A. - many 'talented Khmer artists and artists inspired by the Cambodian musical renaissance happening all over the world' (CMF Website) will be taking part.

Meanwhile, eight time zones away, in Wiltshire, U.K, The Cambodian Space Project will be performing two shows at the prestigious WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) international festival in Charlton Park. This spring and summer, John Pirozzi's acclaimed documentary about the 'Golden Era' of Cambodian rock'n'roll, Don't Think I've Forgotten, has been touring film theatres across America. Members of the Drakkar Band and several other living legends of Cambodian music recently visited the U.S.A. to play a series of sold-out concerts in New York City, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Maryland.

Here at Leng Pleng Towers, in the back streets of Phnom Penh, we cast our eyes over another collection of great gigs and cool scenes set to transpire in Cambodia over the next few days.

Silently Splendid

Aelita – Queen of Mars pic: Meta House

The team at Meta House, the German-Cambodian Cultural Center based in Phnom Penh, never cease to amaze us with their ability to come up with consistently interesting and original events. This Thursday, experimental music act Electrick Universe will improvise a live soundtrack to accompany the 1929 silent movie classic Aelita – Queen of Mars. Check out our sister publication, Kumnooh, to stay in the loop regarding other music and arts events taking place at Meta House. This weekend, the Meta program includes a Paganini violin recital by Mathias Boegner and a multi-media poetry recital by the guys who brought you WASH. Far out!

Leng Pleng is pleased to report that a brace of newly-opened, smaller live music venues in Phnom Penh are doing well with weekly acoustic nights. The excellent Euan Gray will return to Farm To Table this Friday for more soulful originals and experimental guitar loops. Jeff Sleeman will also be getting busy with a looper pedal during his solo show at Eluvium (rooftop of Aura hostel) on Saturday night. Jeff creates an innovative and spell-binding instrumental sound using alternative tunings and incredible technique.

Pot Rockers

Andre: the big man with a big heart. pic: Steve Porte
National Highway Number 3 could get a little busy on Friday evening, as bus-loads of revellers will make the journey from Phnom Penh to Kampot. Well-loved bass player Andre Swart, a South-African expat resident in Phnom Penh for the last few years, will be playing a farewell gig in Kampot with The Jumping Jacks on Friday night at The Magic Sponge. Andre has played in several memorable Phnom Penh-based bands including Grass Snake Union, Kheltica and Moi Tiet. Never one to refuse a new bass-playing challenge, Andre has rocked stages all around The Kingdom and even cultivated a lucrative sideline in performing at Chinese weddings. Leng Pleng wishes him all the best for his imminent return to South Africa.

Kampot venue Bokor Mountain Lodge will host Cambodian songstress Miss Sarawan on Saturday night. The diminutive diva will be regaling the audience with acoustic renditions of Cambodian 'Golden Era' classics. Check out the video above to see Mealea 'Miss Sarawan' Lay make her singing début on Cambodian television last weekend.

Best wishes to Jay Chan, Indravedi, Gobshite MGC, Savy and Evrywhr and all the acts performing on the Cambodian Music Festival stage this weekend and good luck to The Cambodian Space Project as they prepare to unleash the full power of Cambodian rock'n'roll at WOMAD.

Whatever you're up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday 16th July 2015

pic – KCM Nayabinghi Facebook
Looking for ace percussionist KCM Nayabinghi in Phnom Penh on a Thursday night? You will find him perched on a stool, wedged between two huge bass-bin speaker cabinets, centre-stage at Sharky Bar. The speakers will be blasting out monolithic dub-reggae basslines while KCM will be busying himself with an array of weird and wonderful drums and percussion instruments. He will also be smiling a lot. For every Thursday, Sharky Bar becomes Sharky Reggae Bar – when KCM and a guest DJ (tonight, DJ Gorimaa – aka Julien, bass player of Vibratone) liven up the weekly Ladies Night with great tunes, great live sounds and seriously good vibes. Smoke 'em if you got 'em!

Two superb guitarists will join forces on Friday night at Alley Bar for a special acoustic session. Jeffro Sills and Aymen Ghali will perform americana, blues and country tunes at the intimate Phnom Penh venue. Jeffro is a sure-handed Chicago-style blues player and Aymen specialises in a more jazz-influenced repertoire. The gig will be a great chance to observe two expat guitar experts doing their thing without the aid of a supporting band. Aymen Ghali returns to the Alley Bar on Saturday night with gypsy-jazz trio Hot Club de Phnom Penh.

Pavel Ramirez:
he plays with power and passion

Another of Phnom Penh's most talented axemen will be displaying his electric guitar skills on Saturday night at FCC – The Mansion. Swedish-Chilean Pavel Ramirez has a very smooth, melodic and understated style of playing - never showy or abrasive. Pavel also has a very well-drilled rhythm section backing him up in the form of TenTipz. The easy, unobtrusive style of the band, and their 'strictly classics' repertoire may sometimes result in the trio being overlooked on the Phnom Penh music scene – but Pavel & The Ten Tipz are always well worth seeing. Pavel Ramirez is also the resident host of the Sharky Bar Sunday night open jam session.

'Five of the Yale Glee Club’s best singers', circa 1909 - http://www.whiffenpoofs.com/
If you were casting a careful eye over the Leng Pleng Gig Guide and wondering (as I was) 'what the f--- is a Whiffenpoof?!' …wonder no more. Named after a 'mystical dragonfish', the Whiffenpoofs are Yale University's esteemed acapella singing group. Before the start of each school year, for more than a century, fourteen senior Yale men have been selected to form the prestigious singing group (http://www.whiffenpoofs.com/). The Whiffenpoofs travel extensively around the U.S.A. and the world, performing their wide-ranging repertoire of songs arranged for sublime vocal harmony.

Whiffenpoofs of 2013 with a special guest member – pic: http://www.whiffenpoofs.com/
The Whiffenpoofs of 2015 will be touching-down at FCC Angkor Siem Reap this Tuesday the 21st July as part of a mammoth, five-continent, world tour. We strongly advise that you take this rare opportunity to see an historic and internationally-renowned acapella group perform in Cambodia. How often does a band like this come to town? Check out the video below for a taste of the Whiffenpoofs' highly entertaining mix of old and new songs.
