Nine
venues in Siem Reap are currently preparing for Chub Met
Festival - set
to take place between the 15th
and 20th
February. The festival schedule is a fantastic combination of both
international and Cambodian acts and has appeal for both 'Barang' and
Cambodian audiences. Headline
act Dengue Fever will
be making their first
appearance on a Cambodian stage in nearly three years, at the FCC
Angkor on the 17th
February. Other highlights
include Norwegian guitarist
Amund Maarud
and a rare performance by Khmer Surin star Khong Khoy
(singer
of the controversial 'Change Shirt' song). As
always, keep an eye on Leng Pleng
for
more details about Chub Met –
which promises to be the event
of the year-so-far.

Cloud,
a small venue in the backstreets of Phnom Penh, will be having a big
party this Friday night. Two
of the city's best-loved expat bands – Bob
Passion & The Schkoots and
Kok Thlok
- will be hitting the Cloud
stage,
alongside DJs Professor
Kinski and
Radioactive Anne.
An initial plan for a small birthday celebration (for
Cajonista Rémi
Breuillaud)
has escalated into a mini-music festival ('Cloud'stival' ?) with
further acts to be confirmed. Sounds like it's going to be a great
night!
Lap-steel guitarist Dave
Cox is back in the Kingdom of
Wonder – bringing his unusual musical
instrument to bear on
the bands of Phnom Penh and Kampot. The
authentic Americana/blues/country sound of Dave's lap steel has
recently been
combined with
artists as
diverse as Clay George,
Phnom Skor,
and The Kampot
Playboys. This
weekend, Dave
Cox will play a
show with Max Jones' 9999
Arts Group
at the Sundance Inn on
Friday and rockabilly
reprobates The Jumping Jacks at
FCC – The Mansion on
Saturday night.

Dave Cox: back in the swing of things |
Ritchy & Phil
are back in action this weekend, with a special 'jazz cruise' aboard
the Kanika Boat.
The
French music-masters played
a large part in kick-starting the expat music scene in
Phnom Penh when
they first arrived in the late 2000's. This Saturday, Ritchy
Boisson (drums,
vocals) and Phil
Javelle
(keys, vocals) will
be joined by Chinese singing star Ms.
Cy
for
an elegant evening of live
music
whilst
cruising the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers.
Meta House
will host a most
elegant evening of music on Sunday, when Italian
pianist Pietro
Bonfilio
will
perform a grand piano recital of works by Mozart,
Liszt, Debussy and Kabelevsky. The
enigmatically entitled concert, 'Domestic Sphere meets Mystical
Ecstasy', is another great opportunity to experience first-rate
classical music in Cambodia. Check out the video below for a preview.
Whatever you're up
to over the next few days... stay safe out there and... see you
around the traps!
