Television Ted back at the wheel for this week's wrap, giving all you exquisitely discerning live music and DJ aficionados the latest in the totally happening and totally energized local scene.
The Schkoots released their brand new album Straight to the Legend last week at Oscar's new music-oriented service bar. One of the most energetic and happening post-punk Française bands you can see. Bob, Jan and Benoit are right to be fully into extolling the virtues of their great mix of Khmer, French and English originals. You can get their music by clicking on the image below – one of the most determining and pivotal local album releases of recent times. Great sound, great vibe and great energy from one of the local scenes best. I totally recommend that you get down to see them as soon as you can. They will be playing at the Kingdom's cultural art-hub of Kampot both on Friday (Tiki Guesthouse) and Sunday (Moi Teat) and on Saturday you can catch them in Sihanoukville at the Tiki Club. Cool!
The HUGE news for the weekend is the inaugural One World Music Festival happening at The Exchange on this Saturday from 5:00PM. The event is featuring a top line-up of some of the Kingdom's best live music performers. If you haven't seen Conrad Keely's new band then you just absolutely 100% must! The vibe and fervor experienced at the gigs that Keely and his band of awesomely drawn musicians emit is something that, I believe, will be considered reminiscent of the halcyon days of the current Cambodian live music scene! You've just got to get there and see and hear it. Add to that the incredible traditional-fusion-rock of the Kampot Playboys and you have a uniquely and totally unmissable event. If you have never seen these guys perform then, I'm afraid, you just cannot ever say you've been part of the scene here. This band is everything that is awesome about the local scene – great material, great mix of traditional and electric contrivances, totally pumping sounds and great stage performance. They will be playing two sets early on – so get there for the 5:00PM start time.
That is not where it ends though. After the Kampot Playboys the 60s/70s traditional yet psychedelic sounds of the Bokor Magic Mountain Band will take to the stage. Fronted by newly effervescent and sexy Ms. Lue Thy, the BMMB will be playing their first show this year. There will be a number of special guests that will appear with the band throughout their sets – including Sin Sethakol. This will be followed by an eclectic mix of music from all assembled musicians. The festival also promises a number of other performance artists that will be operating around the grounds of the venue. The whole event has been put together by Anthony Lefferts and the SpaceAgency – so it should be a significant and enduring event and one not to miss.
Finally, a huge shout out to Phil Javelle, Lewis Pragasam, Euan Grey, Alexandre Scarpati and Steve Cannon who put on a delectable series of shows last week together with the wonderfully sparkling, Paris-based Linda Lee Hopkins. It was all a part of the opening for Villa Oeun, the new restaurant / bar that is located where Rubies used to be on the corner of streets 19 and 240. We are all so very lucky to have such a great lineup of quality musicians all on the same stage together.
From the Leng Pleng team here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps.
