The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 26th May 2016

Zoe Zac are an indie power trio comprising of Tasmanian singer-songwriter Zoe (guitar/vocals), British bass-player Holly Lewis and Norwegian drummer Henrik Rasmussen. The band are in town for the short 'Voodoo Booglaoo' 'three-headed monster' tour – taking in Oscar's On The Corner in Phnom Penh tonight (Thursday) before heading to Kampot for two dates at KAMA. Zoe creates a 'grunge inspired' wall of sound with her guitar pedals while Holly and Henrik thrash out meaty beats beneath. Juxtaposed with the heavy music are Zoe's fragile and heartfelt vocals – telling true-life tales of loss, longing and conflict. Zoe Zac will be joined by French punk-rockers Maudit Bleu and Cambodian space-garage gang Bokor Mountain Magic Band for the Voodoo Booglaoo dates. Check out Zoe's original music on Metal Postcard records, including songs recorded right here in the Kingdom of Wonder!

Oscar's On The Corner is the new live music room situated upstairs from Oscar Bar on Street 104. The space is smaller than the cavernous Oscar 51 but larger than the original Oscar Bar – albeit with the same unpretentious décor and design. The rock-solid house band play classic covers six nights per week, with a rotating cast of guest musicians (Pavel Ramirez, Antti Siitonen, Canadian Dave, Scott Bywater) helping to mix things up. Oscar has also booked a number of guest bands for upcoming event nights. In addition to the Voodoo Booglaoo show tonight, Joe & The Jumping Jacks will be bringing 1950's-style rockabilly to the venue this Saturday. The Riverside Raybans will be in attendance the following weekend and Road To Mandalay are scheduled for the 10th June. While a dimly-lit hostess bar on Street 104 may not be to every gig-goer's taste, Oscar has, with this expansion, firmly established himself as the king of late-night rock'n'roll venues in Phnom Penh.

12Mé will be strutting his stuff in the very elegant surroundings of Rokku in Phnom Penh on Saturday night. The awesome rapper – who can reel off hundreds of (French) words per minute while bouncing around the stage, waving his arms in the air and generally getting the crowd going – will be backed up by DJ Watt's Up on the wheels of steel. Check out the link above to hear his jazz-infused funky hip-hop album Plan Séquence

Art of Darkness is the second live album by Electrick Universe
A stone's throw from Rokku on Saturday night, the Meta House team will be celebrating the launch of Art of Darkness – a 'Meta Mix CD' co-produced by DJ Nicomatic, Mr. Brown, Dr. Wah-Wah, Tim King, James Speck and Professor Kinski. For nearly three years this collective of Phnom Penh musicians and producers have been meeting for monthly 'free-style electronica sessions' under the banner of Electrick Universe. DJ Nicomatic has fastiduously recorded the improvised happenings and now some of the highlights have been mixed, mastered and made available on this CD release. Call in to Meta House on Saturday night to hear the results and get your very own copy of the album!

The genre-defying musician Amanda Bloom recently posted a striking live video from a gig at Farm to Table in Phnom Penh. This performance of 'Atlas' perfectly displays her incredible composition, vocal and piano-playing skills – helped along by the effortlessly-good drumming of Master Lewis Pragasam. Check out the link below.

Whatever you're up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!
