The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 7th July 2016

“I was looking to see if our gig at Oscar's was listed in the Phnom Penh Post and on the page that had the gig listings there was an article about this new state-of-the-art studio that had recently opened in Siem Reap called 60 Road Studios. I said to the guys at the time, as and when we've got an album to record, maybe we should think about coming back and doing it there. I thought that would be a great experience and great fun to record an album away from Hong Kong and actually immerse ourselves in the process. …and here we are, fifteen or sixteen months later and that is exactly what we are doing.

Most of our colleagues and contemporaries and friends in Hong Kong think we're going for a holiday! But the reality is that we arrive, we play a gig, we're in the studio for seven days, we play another gig and then we fly back. In many ways, as far as I'm concerned, it's a working trip... but obviously we hope to see a bit of Angkor and enjoy some of the Khmer hospitality as well.”

Cambodia... Kingdom of Angkorian Wonder... vibrant arts and music melting pot... and now a destination for international bands looking to record their next album! The Sleeves will this week be following The Cambodian Space Project into the growing list of luminaries to have recorded their music at the 60 Road Studios complex in Siem Reap. English rockers The Sleeves will be book-ending their recording sessions with two gigs: the first of which will take place this weekend at X-Bar. For a healthy dose of 'Zeppelin-style drums, British indie-rock guitars and danceable bass grooves', check out The Sleeves – supported by talented new X-Bar house band Rubra – this Saturday night. The Hong-Kong based quartet will also be at Galaxy Club in Siem Reap next Saturday the 16th. Band leader Keith Goodman discoursed in detail for Leng Pleng regarding the sound of The Sleeves, the process of making an album of original songs, and the experience of running a small, independent, and popular music venue in Hong Kong. Read the full Q&A here.

Under construction: The Mestizo Jungle Bar opens on Saturday.

Small independent music venues such as Showbox are the creative lifeblood of the music scene in Phnom Penh. Mestizo is a new venue, co-owned by musicians Roberto Traina and Aymen Ghali. The opening party on Saturday will feature sets by French hip-hop duo 12ME and Papa Dub and DJ Kaztet Dee. We are not yet sure what the guys' future plans are for live music at the venue, but we are hoping that Mestizo will be another creative space for artists and musicians to meet up. There will certainly be a lot of cool people in attendance and cool things happening on Saturday night.

Stunning: Ai Iwasaki – pic via the advisor cambodia

Ai Iwasaki and Giovanni De Cecco will be performing pieces by Venetian baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi at Meta House on Sunday night. Mezzo Soprano Ai Iwasaki has a stunning voice capable of wowing the audiences of large concert halls and opera houses. Hearing her sing in a small recital room is a sublime treat for the soul. Pianist Giovanni De Cecco and violinist Zoe Dayon will accompany Ai - and also perform instrumental renditions of Vivaldi pieces.

Phnom Penh-based Pianist-singer-composer Amanda Bloom has a number of great videos on her Youtube channel – most recently this beautiful piano improvisation entitled After Theory. Check out the video below – and prepare to drop whatever you are doing and be transfixed by some beautiful and delicate sounds. Leng Pleng hopes to hear Amanda play live in Cambodia again sometime soon.

Whatever you're up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!
