Heavy as a Locomotive: Sangvar Day release new original work. Pic: Steve Porte |
Sangvar Day will
be rocking harder then they have ever rocked before this Friday night
at Showbox
as they play the launch party of their new album, 'National Anthems'.
We asked local metal merchant and Nightmare
A.D.
mainman Mike Priest
his thoughts on their new work – the
entirety of which was composed
and produced right here in Cambodia.
“National
Anthems” is an ambitious and critical step-up from the Sangvar
Day's first E.P. in terms of songwriting and production. These
improved elements clinically shine through the whole of the album, in
parts reminiscent of prominent Alternative acts and Post-Hardcore
bands such as At The Drive-In/The Mars Volta, Muse, Fugazi, Pearl
Jam, The Pixies, Incubus, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Tool.
The
album runs through a vertebra of odd-time signatures, ghost notes,
curious melodies and bursts of fuzz and distortion... There are
Progressive injections of old dirty Blues, Funk and Noise into this
mix which make this release strangely compelling amidst the current
albums of their international peers. There are parts which accentuate
minimalism in instrumentation, letting the vocals soar above the
roaring chords and through the intricate percussive work.
Nightmare
A.D.
will be performing their own brand of thrash-metal
at the 'National Anthems' launch party, along with
Phnom Penh shoe-gazers Simoun.

In
potentially the most powerful Halloween-themed gig of the weekend,
Knell and Doch Chkae will unleash a double dose of
original hardcore music at Oscar's On The Corner
on Saturday night. Knell's
press release warns of a 'bent brew of progressive
alternative metal and undead covers'
that will, terrifyingly, 'pummel its audience to the end'.
Such fighting talk should be discounted at one's peril – do not
forget that their drummer's name is 'Kraken'. Meanwhile, Doch
Chkae will literally be
bouncing around the stage with young Cambodian energy as they preview
tracks from their soon-to-be-released E.P.
Paddy
Rice will
this Monday be taking the unusual step of hosting a Halloween-themed
gig on the actual date of Halloween itself. Miss
Sarawan
will be the
performer, mixing up her repertoire of acoustic classic Khmer songs
with some originals and some Western covers... and
some face paint.
Whatever you're up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!
