Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 15th December 2016

Once again here in the Penh, we are veritably spoiled this week by a fantastic line-up of music gigs and parties. Check out the Leng Pleng Weekly Gig Guide below for the full details.

Regulars at Jazz Club Phnom Penh will already be familiar with the talented jazz guitarist Victor Taboada, who blew everyone away during his last visit with a short burst of sessions around the town. Brace yourself for another round of sweet-sounding and skillfully-executed pieces as Victor hits the Jazz Club again tonight (Thursday) with Hot Club Phnom Penh and on Friday with the ‘Superbass’ quartet. The superbass experiment will feature TWO upright bassists (Seb Adnot, Duylinh Nguyen). Sounds like fun!

The temporary return of ‘the big man with a big heart’, bassist Andre Swart, has sparked a renewal of musical bonds within the band known as ‘Grass Snake Union’. The hillbilly-loving bluegrass brothers have decided to get together for one last stand, featuring fellow founding member Jose Encinas on banjo and Grass Snake alumni Joe Wrigley and Conrad Keely on guitars and vocals. First-time Snakes Chris Davis (who was himself a member of a very early iteration of the Kampot Playboys) on fiddle and Todd Bazley (normally drumming metal beats in Nightmare A.D.) will also join the party at Alchemy on Friday.

Professor Kinski - the man behind legendary Phnom Penh fusionists Dub Addiction - is taking over the Cloud Block Party this Friday night for a special concert. Jan ‘Kinski’ Mueller is a talented producer who has produced hundreds of awesome tracks from his home studio ‘The Madlab’ in the back streets of Phnom Penh - ranging from the French punk of Bob Passion to the hardcore sounds of Psychotic Reactions to remixes for Cambodian Space Project. The Professor will be DJing and toasting along to some of his favorite work of the last few years at Cloud on Friday night. Awesome and interesting music is most certainly guaranteed. Joining Jan on the mic will be fellow ‘Dub Addict’ Okoro Elias Jefferson.

Just when you thought things couldn't get any crazier on the Penh party scene, someone cooks up a brand new format of fabulousness. This Saturday, the guys behind the Mestizo venue will be taking things to a brand new level - the water level! Hypnotic Fist Technique will be supporting international band Wind Star Soul, with live painting by Peap Tarr… on a Mekong River cruise boat! Check out the video above for Windstar’s track ‘Silver and Gold’ - the funky band are originally from Detroit Michigan but have recently settled in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Tickets for the Saturday night boat cruise are available for purchase at Mestizo (#114, Street 95) or Miyabi Restaurant (#67, Street 63).

Speaking of Detroit, another fabulous missive reached us from the Cambodian Space Project flight deck this week. Check out the mini-rockumentary vid below, which shows the band working with producer Jim Diamond.

Whatever you're up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!
