The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 25th August 2016

As the rainy season continues and we head into the post-summer holiday, pre-Pchum Ben session of the calendar, Cambodian music lovers will often be more concerned with the serious business of getting back to work (or back to school) and less mindful of enjoying themselves at gigs and parties. Well, there are always exceptions. Timothy, Ted and myself will still be out there, singing in the rain and boogying on down to the sounds of the many excellent performers around town this weekend. Check out the Leng Pleng Gig Guide below to keep abreast of what's happening. And don't forget to click on the Latest Album Download links at right-hand-side of page to hear some fantastic music of Cambodian origin. Now let us bring you news of some of the Kingdom's hottest original acts:

Cambodian Space Project are in the process of touring their latest Jim Diamond-produced album 'Electric Blue Boogaloo' around the world festival circuit. The thirteen-track opus was created in appropriately international style – recorded in France, Bali and Cambodia... mixed and mastered in Detroit. CSP will be performing in California at the Music Tastes Good Festival in late September. Check out the video below for a look at some of their live antics and their zaniest song yet: 'Rom Ding Dong'.

Phnom Skor recently posted the track 'Bek Sloy Blues' on Soundcloud. The band – in hiatus until guitarist RJ Marshall returns from overseas – recorded this meaty acoustic blues gem at the Cam Projects studio in Kandal Province. Dynamic singer Vanntin 'Tin' Hoeurn is not one to let the grass grow under his feet – he is working on the return of hardcore Cambodian band Sliten6ix, as well as a new 'surf-doom-garage-band' project with Conrad Keely and Clayton England.

Phnom Penh-based Krom have recently released a lush video to accompany their self-professed love song to Cambodia. The grammy award nominated band are famously 'elusive, exclusive and reclusive' but we will bring you news of any upcoming live shows as we receive it.

It has been three years since the Leng Pleng team embarked on a special mission to Mondulkiri to locate the virtuoso musician Nyel Che. After much searching, asking around and many cases of mistaken identity, we did eventually meet the wonderful Nyel, along with his fellow musicians, family members and Bunong tribespeople – including a incredibly strong and charismatic nonagenarian man named Gnel Cla. Television Ted and myself will never forget the experience of lying on the Sen Monorom grass listening to the wonderful, unique music emanating from Nyel's soulful voice and the ingeniously-designed instruments that he played. In the hands of someone less skilled, it would be hard to even recognise this construction of wooden planks, tin cans and steel wire as a musical instrument. In the hands of Nyel, the zither-like contraption brought forth cascading, rapid lines of high-pitched notes to accompany his singing. Ted and I were extremely excited when Nyel and his group accepted our invitation to perform that week at the Leng Pleng Mix live concert in Phnom Penh. At that show, and during an opening slot for the Cambodian Space Project at the FCC, many Phnom Penh gig-goers enjoyed the chance to hear the music of Nyel and the Bunong Tribespeople for the first time.

The Bunong musicians performed at the Leng Pleng Mix in 2013.

A year later, we were shocked and saddened to hear that Nyel Che, unique exponent of Bunong folk song, had passed away.

Archivist Julien Hairon set up a bandcamp page to distribute some lo-fi field recordings that Nyel Che left behind. The recordings were transferred to Julien with the message 'share this music with the whole world'. Click the link at right-hand side of page to discover the amazing sounds of Nyel Che and the Bunong tribespeople.

The singular creative melting pot that is the Cambodian music scene continues to produce original music of the most intriguing and exciting quality. In last week's wrap, we talked to French hip-hop MC 12Mé about his upcoming album – to be released later this year – which looks set to become one of the most important and innovative Cambodian musical happenings of recent times. The Kampot Playboys have also been working on their debut album, with some songs having already been recorded and some tentative production work carried out by Conrad Keely – we are very excited to hear the results!

Check out the video above for a glimpse of a new independent Cambodian movie called Mind Cage. The soundtrack will be a truly awesome work of Cambodian music in its own right – with contributions from Kingdom of Wonder-based musicians Miss Sarawan Band, Krom Monster and Tara Mar. This short movie excerpt is accompanied by the track 'Dance to Forget' by Miss Sarawan Band.

Whatever you're up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!

12Mé will present his hip-hop Block Party bash at Cloud this Friday. Each month, the Phnom Penh venue brings together live rappers, DJs and graffiti artists for an evening in celebration and promotion of hip-hop culture in Cambodia. At this month's Block Party there will also be a screening of 12Mé's film Scratch documenting the artist's 2013 exploration of the Cambodian scene. Rapper and producer Mehdi '12Mé' Benabdessadok let Leng Pleng know a little bit more about his musical mission in the Kingdom of Wonder:

Making it happen in Cambodia: 12Mé with Papa Dub

Klapyahandz laid the foundations of hip hop culture in Cambodia, I want to build on that and show what I can do... I've been visiting Cambodia to tour, every year since 2011. Seven months ago, I moved here permanently. I wanted to have an album featuring Khmer performers... I started working on it in April... My album should be released in November... I will record and produce everything here then send it to a mixing and mastering studio in France for completion. The artists featuring on my album are mostly Klapyahandz artists: Lisha, Mr Oun, Khmer1jivit, Ouk and Yut, Chomraen and Vanna (tro player and roneat player), Nem Tum...”

12Mé has not wasted any time since moving to Cambodia, having already begun to learn the Khmer language while still living in France. He is now even rapping verses in Khmer – with a little help from Cambodian performer Lisha and his language teacher Tida! See the video below for a recent 12Mé freestyle session on live television. Mehdi has already completed many of the tracks for his album, entitled 'Samai Thmei' ('New Era'). While we eagerly await to hear the results, check out the Block Party at Cloud on Friday to see rappers 12Mé, Ouk and Yut, DJ Kdam and graffiti artist Venk demonstrating hip hop culture in Cambodia. You can also catch 12Mé performing live with Papa Dub at the Jazz Club Phnom Penh next Wednesday night.

The members of Nightmare A.D. and Knell will be chomping at the bit to unleash their thrashcore and alternative metal sounds on the crowd at Oscar's On The Corner this Saturday night. With few Phnom Penh venues lending themselves to the heavy and uncompromising style of these bands, each gig is a special event. While some unsuspecting members of the audience might be left wondering: why is everyone at the front slam-dancing into each other?... most will be revelling in the powerful wall-of-sound that these bands produce. Any music night which features in its press release the words 'neck-breaking fury' sounds pretty good to me!

The Alleycat Cafe hosts their third anniversary edition of Sunday Sundowner Sessions this weekend. Three-and-a-half years ago at the fondly-remembered Rubies bar in Phnom Penh, Scott Bywater kicked off a weekly acoustic open mic with a timeslot that allowed maximum potential for lazy Sunday imbibement followed by a respectably early bedtime. The vibe was informal, the venue was 'cosy' and the participants were far more inclined to camaraderie than competition. Beginners and professionals, seasoned expats and fleeting visitors all shared a pew and a brew on the wooden bench-platform that served as a stage. When Rubies closed down in the summer of 2013, it was a natural move to make the Alleycat Cafe its next home. 'Scoddy' is no longer the official host but he can still be found performing there most weeks, along with a loyal bunch of regular performers and visiting musicians. We're not sure exactly how it happens, but a surprising number of great players always seem to find this 'hole-in-the-wall' acoustic session down a Phnom Penh backstreet on a Sunday afternoon.

At time of writing, there are still some tickets left for the Sungha Jung performance scheduled to take place at Dara Airport Hotel in Phnom Penh on Sunday evening. The 'VIP' and 'Gold' tickets for this exclusive event are not cheap, but interested parties should visit the Madison music store on Monivong for more information. Sungha Jung is an incredibly talented guitarist from Korea – an online sensation who shot to fame whilst still in his teens. He is famous for his fingerstyle acoustic covers of popular songs.

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 11th August 2016

One erudite and accomplished singer-songwriter will be making a stop in the Kingdom of Wonder this week. Dragonfly Collector is the solo project of Anglophilic Filipino songwriter Clementine, arriving at Showbox for a special show on Friday night. Clementine has achieved major success in the Philippines since 1999 with his bands Oranges and Lemons and The Camerawalls and set up his own independent record label, Lilystars Records, in 2008. His music is in the Beatles-centric vein of British songwriters like Ian Broudie and Mick Head, and Clementine projects the vulnerability of a sensitive artistic soul such as Elliott Smith or Morrissey. Check out the excellent Dragonfly Collector website for lots more info, sounds, and videos.

Clementine is at Showbox on Friday
Superb trumpet player Steve Cannon is back in town this week with a short series of concerts at selected venues. The highlight could well turn out to be the Friday date at Chinese House when the music industry veteran from Southern California trades lines with one of the best classical, jazz and pop players in the country - Bunhong Cheak. Saxophonist and clarinettist Bunhong will be polishing his alto for a performance of jazz and Asian standards, backed by the ever-strong duo of Lewis Pragasam and Phil Javelle.

It has been nearly five months since the drummer, band-leader and bar-owner known simply as 'Oscar' opened his new live music space 'On The Corner' of Street 13 and Street 104. During a tough 'low season' that has seen audiences at other venues dwindle, Oscar's purpose-built, late night rock'n'roll bar has flourished. With a little help from his friends (Scott Bywater and a rotating cast of loyal house musicians), Oscar has managed to strike just the right balance to succeed in attracting customers night after night. There is a resident house band – but the players and the repertoire change daily. There is a different local 'barang' band most weekends – but when the feature band have finished their set, a group of first-class Cambodian musicians is waiting in the wings to blow the room away with some Khmer rock'n'roll. There are hostesses – Oscar's On The Corner is manifestly a 'girly bar' – but the atmosphere is friendly and non-intimidating. If Oscar never quite achieved this balance at his larger, former venue Oscar 51, and the original Oscar Bar has always been too small, then by jove he has got it right at Oscar's On The Corner and all credit to him. Oscar, the Phnom Penh music scene needs you!

Everybody plays harder at Oscar's! The Kampot Playboys - pics: Steve Porte

Back in March, two of the finest and most original rock bands in Cambodia – The Kampot Playboys and Bob Passion & The Schkoots – opened up the new Oscar's On the Corner venue with a loud and celebratory bang. The Playboys will return to Oscar's this Saturday for another rip-roaring set of Khmer rock fusion. If you have not caught the 'boys set before... expect loud and compelling music, sweat dripping from the walls of a crowded house and large quantities of ice-cold Cambodian lager consumed. And remember: the best rock band in Phnom Penh live in Kampot!

Cambodia Rocks is the title of the first official recording release by the exuberant Batbangers. The EP combines two recent tracks with demos recorded by the band last year. Check out the link above to support original Cambodian music written and performed by the young five-piece band from Battambang, recorded and produced at 60 Road Studios, Siem Reap. Rock on, Batbangers!
