The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 29th September 2016

Quiet and peaceful Pchum Ben in Phnom Penh ? Not really! The city may be emptying out but there are a bunch of high-energy electronic music acts visiting town this weekend. If you are not planning to join the exodus... join the party!

Furious finger-drumming at Nova tonight. Pic via DJ Chamber Facebook

DJ Chamber is a DJ/Producer originally hailing from Bristol UK, currently based in Taiwan. He has previously played around the South-East Asian region but tonight (Thursday) will be his first visit to Cambodia. Nova Club will host the dexterous DJ, who remixes classic hip-hop with his own style of 'controller-ism' – using banks of buttons to trigger samples with his fingers, in the same way that a drummer uses a set of drums. Check out the DJ Chamber Youtube channel to find out more.

New Fame comprises of Adrienne Mack-Davis and Felicia Cruz – two MCs from North America, now relocated in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. As well as performing live to large crowds at various festivals and events, New Fame has a broader, non-musical mission as a 'multi-faceted entertainment company' with an interesting philosophy behind it: 'New Fame is the idea that we can all help ease each other from the gross mutation of ego by being a bit more humble to our own imperfections because that is the true human experience'. In Cambodia, the partner organisation of New Fame, Fighting for Futures, has been working on the prevention of human trafficking. New Fame will be performing a series of gigs in Phnom Penh over the next few days – beginning with a midnight appearance at Pontoon tonight. The duo will continue with a show at Mestizo on Friday night and performances at Lazy Gecko and new venue Hops on Saturday. Check out the above video for a clip of a performance in New York City.

Hypnotic Fun: Henrik, Michael and 'G' blast Showbox with
some live hip-hop mash-ups. Pic: Steve Porte

Hypnotic Fist Technique are a brand new band born out of the Showbox weekly open mic session. Gaurav 'G' Raul and Michael Bridgett are a power tag-team of MCs backed up by a beefy live hip-hop band. Box regulars Paul Gillespie (bass) Ian (guitar) and Henrik Rasmussen (drums) will lay down the big beats while Danzo Ke'Aloha will produce some heavy and distorted sounds from keyboards and live electronics. Hypnotic Fist Technique will play their second-ever gig this Sunday evening at the grand opening of L Barsituated on the former Boeng Kak Lakeside. This high-energy band sounds like just the thing to stoke up a party – and perhaps just the thing to shake up this whole town!

Best of luck and warm regards to the Batbangers band as they prepare to travel to South Korea for an appearance at the Zandari Festa a music industry showcase festival featuring hundreds of bands from dozens of different countries (Zandari Festa website). The Batboys posted the below video on Facebook to let their friends and supporters know how excited they are to be journeying to Seoul for the show and how much they are looking forward to showcasing their own original songs (and some classic Cambodian rock'n'roll!) for an international audience. Good luck lads!

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 22nd September 2016

Ted, Timothy, myself and all the gang at Leng Pleng Towers would like to give a shout out to photographer extraordinaire Steve Porte. Steve is a tireless supporter of the Phnom Penh live music scene, seemingly out at all gigs at all hours in all weather. Steve has kindly made his striking and beautiful monochrome shots available for us to post here on Leng Pleng. If you've ever glanced at the weekly wrap before, or ever followed a Phnom Penh band on Facebook, you will have admired his work. When Steve is not able to be present at a gig, it feels like it didn't happen! Check out some of Steve's images below, and be sure to hit up his website. Thanks Mr Porte!

Simoun are a post-rock 'shoegazer' band formed recently in Phnom Penh. The music is heavy on effects and atmospherics. With bandmates Gem Habito and Genesis' attention focussed on the floor, Steve Porte dropped his flash on the stage and caught this shot – at Oscar's On The Corner. Simoun will be playing at Cloud this Friday night.

Krom received international media attention from as far away as the U.S., U.K. and Spain for their recent performance at Phnom Penh Jazz Club. With Seb Adnot's double bass in the background, alto saxophonist Jimmy Baeck blows a solo while singer Sophea Chamroeun contemplates her next line.

Bassist Ned Kelly offers a smile during a recent Sangvar Day performance at the FCC. The French-Italian-American rockers perform spiky, original, heavy-riff based music with lyrics inspired by the Cambodian experience. Catch them this Friday at Oscar's On The Corner.

Into the music: Ukulele James will be on song this Saturday (pic: supplied)

James 'Ukes of Hazard' Speck will be regaling a daytime crowd at Farm to Table with some groovy jazz-blues this Saturday. Following on from the success of their weekly Acoustic Fridays, the venue is doubling down with an extra live music session for the monthly Farmer's Market. Speck's entertaining on-stage persona is always fun and zany – mixing the smooth sounds of the ukulele with bizarre synthesiser lines. Fruity!

Sebastien Adnot and his talented group of musicians continue to produce excellent music on a nightly basis at Jazz Club Phnom Penh. Videographer NiCh-Se7en caught this spirited version of jazz standard 'All of Me' at a recent gig:

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 15th September 2016

The spirit of the celebrated (and much-missed) Phnom Penh venue Equinox is alive and kicking within the Equinox Archives Online Museum - a site produced by 'Mr Equinox' himself, Anthony Mrugacz. Anthony has now made a portion of his extensive audio archive available online via 'Radio Free Equinox in Exile'. Here you will find audio samples from several years of live gigs, documenting performances by bands as diverse as Grass Snake Union, Sliten6ix and Mekong Pirates. Former Equinox General Manager Mrugacz is currently in self-professed 'exile' in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A – still working in the challenging field of live sound engineering. Seventeen months after the venue's closure, Phnom Penh is now fortunate to boast two excellent full-time dedicated live music spaces in Jazz Club Phnom Penh and Oscar's on The Corner. One cannot help but wonder if Anthony might be persuaded to return to the city sometime in the near future to add a third in the form of 'Equinox 2'! - we certainly hope so!

(l-r) Clayton England, Conrad Keely and Brendan Moerman create
another great jam at Showbox. Pic: Steve Porte

The guys at Showbox have been doing very well with their weekly Wednesday Open Mic sessions. The event is always well-attended and features the most eclectic and energetic set of regular performers to be found at any such open jam around town. Alaskan fish farmer Clayton England has quit the city at short notice after overseeing several successful editions of the night – but sometime hosts Scott Bywater and Danzo Ke'Aloha are still around to ensure that things proceed smoothly. With a slightly wobbly sound system and a very hot and crowded room, steering the Showbox open mic ship is no easy task. But the results have been consistently great, with performers such as Michael Bridgett, Vantinn Houern and Brendan Moerman all showing up regularly to make the music happen. The resulting jams range from crazy hip-hop/funk mash-ups to Khmer blues to avant-garde instrumental post-rock, in addition to staple singer-songwriter acoustic fare. This Saturday night, there will be an additional jam session at Showbox to celebrate the birthday of singer Vantinn 'Tin' Houern... let the fun commence!

Classy Chris Kotchie will display some serious guitar
work on Sunday. Pic: Meta House Facebook

The German Cambodian Cultural Center, better known simply as Meta House, will be hosting another fabulous classical music recital this Sunday evening. Australian Chris Kotchie is not only a concert-level classical guitarist but also a composer. His compositions are influenced by the history and landscapes of his homeland and he has studied with one of the finest guitar duos in the world: The Grigoryan Brothers. Check out the Soundcloud link below for a sample of Chris' work.

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 8th September 2016

Awesome skills and an archtop guitar: Victor Taboada – Pic: Steve Porte

Phnom Penh is in need of a first-rate jazz guitarist. The city's boutique jazz scene received a massive boost recently with the opening of the only dedicated and permanent live jazz lounge: Jazz Club Phnom Penh. The Jazz Club is the only place in town where you can hear top-quality musicians playing hot, cool, smooth, modern, classic or manouche several nights per week. Excellent weekly nights at Est. Bar, Bouchon and now Riverhouse Asian Bistro also host Phnom Penh's best singers, horn players, drummers, bassists and keyboardists. But where are the jazz guitar players? Victor Taboada is a Columbian guitarist living in Thailand, currently on a short Cambodian sojourn that we sincerely hope will turn into a more extended stay! Victor has the dazzling dexterity, beautiful warm clean guitar tone and effortless grasp of difficult chord progressions which set apart a superb jazz guitarist. Catch him tonight (Thursday) and on Friday night at Jazz Club Phnom Penh and, if you meet Victor, tell him to please hang around a little longer!

(l-r) Chris Minko, Sophea Chamroeun, James Sokleap and Jimmy B prepare for the show. Pic: Steve Porte.

Cambodian music will also be very much on the agenda at Jazz Club this week as the 'elusive, exclusive and reclusive' Krom play their sole gig of the year-so-far on Saturday night. The mixed Cambodian and Australian band fuse acoustic guitars, bass, keys and saxophone with the distinctly Khmer (and absolutely beautiful) vocal stylings of sisters Sophea and Sopheak Chamroeun. Since guitarist Chris Minko founded the band in 2010, Krom have generally eschewed the live concert circuit in favour of songwriting and recording. Their efforts are manifested in two studio albums, an international following and, recently, submission to the nominations for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. Check out the short video documentary below for a great introduction to the music of Krom. A word to the wise if you are planning to attend the gig on Saturday: space is limited and you are advised to contact The Jazz Club directly to reserve a seat. Cambodian music will continue at the Jazz Club on Wednesday night when the Miss Sarawan Quartet will play a special gig with Cambodian saxophonist Bunhong Cheak.

More excellent Khmer-fusion sounds are bubbling up all over the country at the moment. Kampot-based Mute Speaker creates his own brand of ambient hip-hop with a distinctly Cambodian edge. Click the link below to check out his latest track 'Skor' on Soundcloud. Meanwhile in Battambang, Anna Smyrk and Vanthan Belo have been collaborating on their 'atmospheric folk' fusion project Romhaii check out the Facebook and Soundcloud pages to find out more!
