The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday 29th December 2016

2016 was the year in which shocking political events and unexpected deaths rocked the world, perhaps even rattling some of us expats settled permanently here in The Kingdom of Wonder! Time now to put the worst of events behind us and ‘party like its 1999’.

Master of fanfare: Big Mike pic by Steve Porte

Wherever you choose to enjoy live music this New Year’s Eve, you might hear a request for music by one of the following artists: George Michael, Leon Russell, Leonard Cohen, Toots Thielemans, Scotty Moore, Guy Clark, Papa Wemba, Prince, Merle Haggard, Phife Dawg, Glenn Fry and David Bowie - to name but some of the celebrity musicians of the world who passed away in 2016 (NBCnews). In the relatively tiny world of the Phnom Penh music scene, many experienced a huge personal and musical loss with the passing of the principal partner of Sharky Bar, Michael ‘Big Mike’ Hsu last May (click here to read more). The surviving partners of Sharky Bar have continued to carry the torch of live music at ‘the longest running Rock & Roll bar in Indochina’, albeit on a slightly smaller scale and with a little less ‘Big Mike’-style fanfare. Rock’n’roll is firmly on the agenda at Sharky this weekend, with gigs by The Jumping Jacks on Friday and The Chi-Town Players to ring in the New Year on Saturday night.

Always situated at the heart of the party:
Kampot Playboys at KWRF 2016 - pic: Steve Porte

The outstanding New Year’s Eve gig is, without a shadow of a doubt, to be found on the banks of the Kampot River at the Banyan Tree. Kampot Playboys band leader Mark Chattaway has assembled a highly impressive line-up of acts, setting up a live music and DJ party of truly epic proportions. So unmissable is this gig that residents of Phnom Penh have been rumored to have chartered so-called ‘drunk buses’ to ferry their bodily forms from the backstreets of the city, directly to the Banyan moshpit, and back again. While the Playboys will be headlining sometime after midnight, the whole show starts in the early evening with sets by Phnom Skor, Professor Kinski and Graham Cain’s The GC Riders. Multiple DJs will also be performing to ensure a unceasing party zone. Michael Bridgett of Hypnotic Fist Technique gave Leng Pleng a few words to let us know exactly how awesome the party will be and why he is so excited about his band’s set:

“2016 has not been kind to you. You’ve lost beloved artists, your sense of safety, and even faith in your home country. You’ve watched as the news has become fake, the thrills have become dangerous, and the love has become as corrupted as the politicians that claim to serve us.

No… 2016 has not been kind to us.

So here… on it’s last day, we, the Hypnotic Fist Technique shall not be kind to 2016. With our collection of sound, lyrics, and attitude, we shall be the boot of retribution that plants a steel toe right in the ass of this accursed year. Along with the legendary Kampot Playboys, Phnom Skor, GC Riders, Professor Kinski, and the rest of the crew, we shall be the mighty kick that hits 2016 where the good lord split it, sending it spiraling into a forgotten past.”
- MICHAEL BRIDGETT

Wow! Cheers Michael… see you on the drunk bus!

Phil.E.Stein is Phil Brandon, a rock’n’roller with a long history of performing live and recording in Australia. Phil will be teaming up with an expert blues rock band for a special gig at FCC’s The Mansion on New Year’s Eve. Much more than just a covers merchant, Phil.E.Stein has recently completed a soon-to-be-released album of his own material. Check out the video below for his track ‘Greed’.

For appropriate recovery and relaxation in Phnom Penh on New Year’s Day, one could do very well in attending one of two excellent acoustic music sessions taking place in the early evening. The venue formerly known as Alley Cat has now re-opened under the name ‘Tacos Kokopelli’. The Sunday Sundowners session will be taking place as normal this weekend.

Rocking on into the New Year: Jeffro Sills

Just south of Sihanouk Boulevard, Jeffro Sills will be bringing his refined acoustic guitar picking skills and strong voice to the new weekly Sunday session at Zeppelin Cafe. Jeffro has a wide range and repertoire but as regular readers will know, his first love is the blues.

Very best of wishes and seasons greetings to all readers of Leng Pleng, and a heartfelt thank you for continuing to explore the Cambodian music scene with us for the past several years. We will leave you with an original song by one Liza Owen - a
‘half British half Cambodian singer, songwriter, musician and model from London.’ - whom we hope will be coming to The Kingdom of Wonder to perform sometime in 2017!

Whatever you're up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!

Back in Town: Barry Speirs. Pic: www.kenedgar.com

Jazz Club Phnom Penh will welcome former Phnom Penh resident Barry Speirs through its doors tonight (Thursday). British Jazz pianist Barry will be teaming up with Rhiannon Johnson for a select number of gigs over the next few days. After all, what better place to spend one’s Christmas holidays than right here in Phnom Penh! The magic of the city music scene is somewhat infectious… once you have spent a little time here, you will always want to come back!

The structural integrity of the Showbox venue will be tested to the limit on Friday night, when an explosive mix of Cambodian metal and deathcore will come together in a triple-header of mayhem. Sliten6ix will be performing their first public show in two years, marking the imminent release of brand-new EP, Hiraeth. New Sliten guitarist Nara Tsitra joins the original line-up of drummer Alan Ou, bassist Billie, guitarist Kao Howard and vocalist VanntinTinHoeurn. Tin told Leng Pleng that the band’s set on Friday will be a short one, focussing on the new songs comprising the Hiraeth EP. Support comes from the incendiary Doch Ckae and the ultra hard-hitting Vartey Ganiva. All three acts are a vital part of the current resurgence of Yab Moung Records, which also boasts Nightmare A.D. as one of its bands. Yab Moung have recently been producing records out of a small studio in Kandal province.

Those seeking some Western-style Christmas cheer have many musical choices on the 24th and 25th. Good tidings will be conveyed by Rhiannon Johnson at Farm to Table, Joshua Chiang and Colin Grafton at Trattoria Bello, Maestro Saxo at the FCC and many more, including a Celtic-style gig by Conrad Keely and company at Paddy Rice on Christmas Eve. As always, check out the Leng Pleng Weekly Gig Guide below to keep abreast of happenings. My own personal feeling about Christmas in Cambodia tends more towards incredulity than celebration, but I will resist the compelling urge to discuss transparent commercialism and superfluous unofficial holidays and satisfy myself with a quick… Bah Humbug!

Coming Soon: Dontrey Chub Met Mark Two. pic: King’s Road Angkor Facebook/est

Reasons to be cheerful in 2017 include the forthcoming second edition of Dontrey Chub Met - The Siem Reap music festival combining some heavyweight international acts with domestic favourites. Watch this space for lots more information about the many artists and events arriving in Siem Reap towards the end of February.

Whatever you're up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!

Master of the fretboard: Victor performs at Jazz Club. Pic: Steve Porte

Once again here in the Penh, we are veritably spoiled this week by a fantastic line-up of music gigs and parties. Check out the Leng Pleng Weekly Gig Guide below for the full details.

Regulars at Jazz Club Phnom Penh will already be familiar with the talented jazz guitarist Victor Taboada, who blew everyone away during his last visit with a short burst of sessions around the town. Brace yourself for another round of sweet-sounding and skillfully-executed pieces as Victor hits the Jazz Club again tonight (Thursday) with Hot Club Phnom Penh and on Friday with the ‘Superbass’ quartet. The superbass experiment will feature TWO upright bassists (Seb Adnot, Duylinh Nguyen). Sounds like fun!

Andre Swart performing with Daniel Talstra. Pic - Alex Leonard

The temporary return of ‘the big man with a big heart’, bassist Andre Swart, has sparked a renewal of musical bonds within the band known as ‘Grass Snake Union’. The hillbilly-loving bluegrass brothers have decided to get together for one last stand, featuring fellow founding member Jose Encinas on banjo and Grass Snake alumni Joe Wrigley and Conrad Keely on guitars and vocals. First-time Snakes Chris Davis (who was himself a member of a very early iteration of the Kampot Playboys) on fiddle and Todd Bazley (normally drumming metal beats in Nightmare A.D.) will also join the party at Alchemy on Friday.

Professor Kinski - the man behind legendary Phnom Penh fusionists Dub Addiction - is taking over the Cloud Block Party this Friday night for a special concert. Jan ‘Kinski’ Mueller is a talented producer who has produced hundreds of awesome tracks from his home studio ‘The Madlab’ in the back streets of Phnom Penh - ranging from the French punk of Bob Passion to the hardcore sounds of Psychotic Reactions to remixes for Cambodian Space Project. The Professor will be DJing and toasting along to some of his favorite work of the last few years at Cloud on Friday night. Awesome and interesting music is most certainly guaranteed. Joining Jan on the mic will be fellow ‘Dub Addict’ Okoro Elias Jefferson.

Just when you thought things couldn't get any crazier on the Penh party scene, someone cooks up a brand new format of fabulousness. This Saturday, the guys behind the Mestizo venue will be taking things to a brand new level - the water level! Hypnotic Fist Technique will be supporting international band Wind Star Soul, with live painting by Peap Tarr… on a Mekong River cruise boat! Check out the video above for Windstar’s track ‘Silver and Gold’ - the funky band are originally from Detroit Michigan but have recently settled in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Tickets for the Saturday night boat cruise are available for purchase at Mestizo (#114, Street 95) or Miyabi Restaurant (#67, Street 63).

Speaking of Detroit, another fabulous missive reached us from the Cambodian Space Project flight deck this week. Check out the mini-rockumentary vid below, which shows the band working with producer Jim Diamond.

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 8th December 2016

Things continue to bubble up on the Cambodian music scene this week with brand new collaborations and some superb international performers visiting The Kingdom.

Lost in music: Don Camilo. pic : Don Camilo Facebook

Don Camilo last visited Phnom Penh back in April of this year. The Chilean reggae singer was full of good vibes, catchy vocal hooks and neat dance moves at Sharky Bar when he performed there with Papa Dub. This week, Camilo will be reunited with Papa at The Venue (also known as Bob’s Garage) in Sihanoukville on Friday night. The gig will feature an appearance by Cambodian chanteuse Miss Sarawan - showcasing an interesting new Khmer vocal/dub reggae project cooked up by Papa Dub. To make sure the party is fully rocking, Bob Passion and the Mixters band will also be performing a set. Don Camilo will be back on the bus to Phnom Penh on Saturday morning, in preparation for another rocking set of reggae vocals at Alchemy that night. Check out his talents in the video below.

Kampot City will be rocking on Friday night at the fantastic Banyan Tree venue - house band The Kampot Playboys will be bolstered by an appearance from Tin and R.J. of Phnom Skor, in addition to soulful acoustic duo Simmer. Banyan Tree has been expanded and remodeled since Playboys singer Sok Chiet took over the venue formerly known as Bodhi Villa. The stage, bar, terrace and dance floor areas now hold a much larger capacity of rockers and revellers. The Friday night tradition of expats and backpackers sharing a brew and a boogie is very much still in force.

Back in Phnom Penh, a brace of new bands will be making their debut over the weekend. Blue Lotus is comprised of Seth Khan (guitar & vocals), Gildas Maronneaud (bass guitar) and Peang Kanika (drums and percussion), with Yeang Sok Mean also joining on keyboards. The group have been working up a set of original songs which they will unveil at the Cloud venue on Friday night. Blue Lotus is a hard-rocking and progressive guitar combo with an alternative style and sound - we look forward to checking them out.

Stepping out: Channty Kak. pic - CSP website

Channthy Cha-Cha is a new band from the voice of the Cambodian Space Project - Channty Kak. The singer has brought together group of excellent young Khmer rock musicians (and a self-professed ‘token barang’) to play old favourites together with new original songs and classic Cambodian dancing music. The ‘token barang’ himself, Scott Bywater, told Leng Pleng that ‘the charisma and energy of Channthy shines through, channelling the spirits of her heroes Pen Ron, Tina Turner and Amy Winehouse to re-invent her stage persona as a strong, independent woman with something to say. If you knew and loved her with the CSP, be prepared to be blown away…’

You can catch the very first public performance of Channty Cha-Cha at Oscar’s On The Corner this Saturday night. Channty and Scott will also be making an acoustic appearance on Radio One this Saturday afternoon.

The International Jazz Festival will arrive in Phnom Penh next week, bringing some truly top-drawer players to the city. Yutaka Shiina is a pianist and composer from Japan - playing with his piano trio this Tuesday at Raffles. Check out the video above for a preview. Wednesday sees four of the best young singers in Cambodia take part in ‘Khmer Jazz Experiment’ - a collaboration with four top Phnom Penh-based jazz players - set to take place at Black Box Theater. Black Box, at ISPP campus, is possibly the best-equipped theatre in Cambodia. Finally, on Thursday the 15th, Sara Lazarus will bring her incredible jazz voice to Raffles. Good stuff!

Whatever you're up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!
