Coming to a venue near you, tonight! Hexis pic - supplied |
Oscar’s On The Corner will kick off another busy weekend of music with a special one-off evening of hardcore and metal music tonight (Thursday) - featuring no less than four bands! The bill has been put together by one of the engines of the Phnom Penh music scene - Ned Kelly. Ned has, once again, galvanised some of his extensive musical contacts and brought in some visiting international bands:
“HEXIS is a Black Metal/Hardcore hybrid of sorts (fans of Deafheaven, take note) from Copenhagen, Denmark. They have played over 300 shows all over the world from the USA, Europe, Russia, Japan and even Cuba. They are veterans of the stage and their show is intense.
INSINNER are a Death Metal band from Malaysia who go whole hog with the theatrical aspects of metal. Think make-up, long hair, and band member pseudonyms like Cryptor (guitar) and Torment (drums.) They play "traditional" death metal (did you ever think you'd live long enough to be uttering a phrase like that? I sure didn't) that is fast and heavy and extremely tight live.

Cheers, Ned, the night looks awesome and thanks for making things happen!
Bong Bong Bong is a new ‘3-in-1’ establishment opening up this weekend on the laneway known as Street 240 ½ in Phnom Penh. Simultaneously a bar, a thrift shop and a painting workshop, the Bong Bong Bong opening party on Friday night will feature sets by the awesome 12MÉ, DJ Bree and DJ Niko Yu.
Botanico will be serving up a delectable acoustic night on Friday, featuring two different performers. Jeff Sleeman is a talented guitarist from the UK who is just as comfortable shredding with a band as he is performing a solo fingerstyle set of subtly elaborate, Ewan Dobson-inspired instrumental songs. Jeff will be saving the shredding for Saturday night (Jadermeister, also at Botanico) and going fully acoustic for a double bill with the delightful Lisa Concepcion on Friday evening.
Tacos Kokopelli is the re-branded Alleycat, this weekend enjoying an official opening weekend with musical accompaniment by Robin Narciso (Friday), Billy Page (Saturday) and the usual Sunday afternoon Sundowners acoustic session. Billy Page sent us this cool video (below) which gives a great insight into his approach to music and his original songs. Best wishes and good luck to Tacos Kokopelli and we hope that the new brand will host just as many memorable musical moments as did the Alleycat.
Multi-instrumentalist Stanford Reid will be back performing at the unique artistic hub that is Showbox this week - with a full gig on Tuesday night and as host of the hectic weekly Wednesday open mic. Live sax, vocals and bass guitar accompany pre-recorded tracks to create a very original and unique show.
Whatever you're up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!
